We (with Eric Richards) have worked with many world language educators, ranging from classroom teachers to curriculum specialists who support teachers, and we've engaged in insightful conversations, asking thought-provoking questions such as:“How can we best equip students for the rapidly evolving landscape of the digital age, where technology is at our fingertips, including various online translation programs?”“What exciting transformations occur when students embrace global readiness?”Our approach, explore-before-explain teaching, is designed to empower educators in tackling the challenges of preparing students for the 21st century head-on. By honing in on the essential components of learning, we strive to cultivate an educational experience that is not only equitable and robust but also truly unforgettable. Once we grasp the essence of explore-before-explain teaching—the cornerstone concepts outlined in the four Planning Considerations—we're poised to innovate and iterate, crafting lessons that resonate deeply with our students. Through this instructional design journey, we're fostering the skills necessary to create culturally rich and inclusive classroom environments, accessible to each and every learner.Get all the details in our just published ACTFL World Langauge Educator article found here: https://www.actfl.org/#ACTFL #GlobalReadiness #LanguageLearning

In this recent commentary on EdSource, ELSF's Sr Advisor Renae Skarin discusses the importance of adopting instructional materials that are responsive to English Learner needs. To help California districts understand and choose math materials that allow English Learners to succeed, several partners developed an educator-friendly rubric."District and state leaders spend significant time, money and human resources during the materials-adoption process. It is essential that we provide them with practical tools and resources to maximize the costly adoption process so they make the best decisions for their English learners and all students.A new educator-friendlyrubricfrom the California Curriculum Collaborative does just that. It provides California state and district leaders with practical criteria to evaluate whether the materials they are considering for adoption address the language and content needs in math of English learners."

The right instructional materials in math can make all the difference for English learners https://edsource.org

There are so many good suggestions here that aren’t only engaging and supportive of our ELL students, these strategies help all students. Some of my personal favorites are:3. Engaging students in structured talk - QSSSA takes some work and thought initially, but it helped us be intential in the classroom with conversations 4. Provide access to grade-level content - scaffolds are key. If we’re not providing our students access to grade-level content, we are creating gaps 5. Embrace and love them - heart and mind, capture their heart and you’ll capture their mind9. Have students collaborate with peers - learning from and with one an is powerful 11. Give think/wait time - give them time to process 15. Offer sentence stems with academic vocabulary - in our room, I had them leveled by Bloom’s. It gave kids a safe place to look, especially during wait time or when they were asking each other content based questions
