Every April 26th, we celebrate World Intellectual Property Day to learn about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. The day is celebrated to raise awareness of the impact of how patents, copyright, trademarks and design affect our daily life.History of World IP Day:World IP Day was launched in the year 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to promote and protect creative ideas, including music, art, trademarks, writings, and inventions. The official date for World IP Day is April 26th, but events are held all over the world throughout the springtime. How is World IP Day Celebrated?World IP Day is celebrated all over the globe in the form of panels, receptions, expos, and educational outreach for students of all ages.Theme for World Intellectual Property Day 2023:Women make up nearly half of the global population (49.58%).While women in all regions are moulding the world through their ingenuity, their innovative and creative potential remains largely underutilized. It is reported that women only make up 7.7 of primary inventors who hold patents. According to the "Women’s Institute for Policy Research", while women have quintupled their representation among patent holders since 1977, less than one in five patents in the United States have at least one woman inventor named. So World Intellectual Property Day 2023 strives to promote women representation in IP with its theme “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”https://lnkd.in/gBc34YMPatenti Technology Solutions #worldipday2023 #intellectualproperty

It was my honour to attend the IP National Convention, 2023, an event first of its kind hosted by the Nigerian Intellectual Property Club (NIPC) last week in Lagos, Nigeria. The event catered to lawyers, students, founders, and intellectual property enthusiasts of a divergent class to come together and learn more on the future of Intellectual Property from each other. As the IP National Convention 2023 has officially come to its end, it is my privilege to share some of the many insightful nuggets i have learned from the brilliant speakers. ●"The world responds to those who dare to dream." - Oluwatobiloba Moody Moody, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO Nigeria. Upon hearing this, I instantly thought of all of my own suppressed dreams, the far skies they could take me if I would only dare to dream. ● "The law is as considerate as the terms of contract outlined." - Godwin Tom , the managing director of Sony Music Entertainment Nigeria. In fighting for your Intellectual Property rights, you must ensure to be wary of what you put your signature to. A contract is a binding agreement, which is why the brilliant Mr Temitope Salami said during the IP & Entertainment Breakout Session that in recent days most creatives would first get themselves a lawyer before they get a manager and prefer their lawyer to be by their side wherever they go. This is because it is common knowledge that they need to protect themselves in all deals before anything else. ● "This is an exciting time where you can be creative" - Rita Anwarah. This has encouraged me to put out myself in a more creative manner, for the truth of the matter is that the world is encouraging and many at times, rewarding creativity in individuals. ● if you don't create, you will be poor! This exclamation was presented in a panel session on the 2nd of August, 2023. Furthering my last point, it reiterates the reward of creativity. ● "Why create a business with someone you don't trust?" - Oluwajoba Oloba in the IP and Tech breakout session. This was part of his response regarding a response in relation to founders’ agreements, a topic in which I'd be excited to write more in the coming future. One thing I will be ever grateful for is the convention has connected me with various circles within and outside the legal field. It also enlightened me greatly about the several amazing ways I may apply myself to the budding Intellectual Property field in Nigeria coming forward. Thank you to the Nigerian Intellectual Property Club (NIPC) and all the amazing sponsors who *dared to dream* alongside the Club, it truly has been an impactful experience. #ipc2023 #ipcnaija #ipcawareness #ipcnaijaflex #ipcandtech #ipcandentertainment

🙌 It's British IP Day 2023 #BritishIPDay23 today - and the Alliance for IP which organises it is also celebrating its 25 anniversary! 🎂 The Alliance has put together a booklet celebrating its birthday, and explaining its purpose, how it works, and the importance of IP to the UK economy.Obviously, at Inngot we share the Alliance's belief that #IP matters and we are currently focused on developing the framework for a strong IP-based finance system. IP is the driver of the modern economy. High growth companies today do not rely on bricks and mortar stores, or on solid physical assets; they are powered by IP and related intangible assets. Unfortunately, this means today's IP-rich companies, particularly scale-up firms, often face a “Catch-22” situation. IP and intangibles are fuelling their growth, but many lenders find it difficult to ‘see’ the real value of these off-balance sheet assets. So, even thought they may have hugely valuable IP and may already be profitable businesses, they are being asked for tangible assets (which they usually don't have) as security for funding which they need to fully expoit and monetise the valuable IP assets which they do have! This problem contributes to a scale-up Funding Gap estimated at around £15bn in the UK in 2019, according to The Future of Growth Capital report from the ScaleUp Institute, Innovate Finance and Deloitte. So one of the solutions to this challenge is to find a way to allow IP to be used as collateral - which is something we are working on right now.Watch this space! In the meantime, let's all celabrate British IP Day. It's great that an organisation like the Alliance, which is backed by 20+ UK trade associations with a stake in proper IP protection and development, exists. The UK is fortunate to have such a strong IP support system, and it's important that the Alliance is neutral, engaging with MPs and other politicians from all sides of the political spectrum. It also works closely with organisations such as the Intellectual Property Office. As part of the celebrations today, Alliance members and others with a keen interest in IP policy will hear from Chi Onwurah MP, the Shadow Minister for IP, on Labour’s approach to IP policy. The meeting is being hosted in Parliament by Kevin Brennan MP, a member of the Media, Culture and Sport Select Committee and a long-standing supporter of the creative industries. The day will end with a reception, hosted by Pete Wishart, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for IP, on the terrace of the House of Commons at which attendees will hear a keynote speech from Viscount Camrose. The event will also be attended by Parliamentarians from all the political parties. #intellectualproperty #BIPD https://lnkd.in/etSVJCHZ

Create - Imagine - BelieveOne week ago today we launched our first ever Counseling Creators: Influencers, Artists and Trendsetters Competition and Conference University of Miami School of Law hosted by our Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Program (EASl). 12 teams competed in a negotiation competition on Thursday including Harvard, Brooklyn, Cardozo, UF, Tulane, Villanova, UNH, NEL, St. Thomas, & Miami. In the first round, teams were representing either Cardi B or Celsius and round two was the Cavinder Twins or Alo. Day 2 was a conference and the finals of the competition. Groups negotiated exclusivity, term, grant of rights, social media deliverables, compensation, morals clauses and more! There is so much to say about the event and so many people to thank but I want to start up by thanking the judges. In under 4 months over 40 lawyers, executives, and creators joined this movement and agreed to participate in our first ever event as either a judge or panelist. So many reached out with a simple "How can I help?" 24 amazing humans came out to judge, nearly half coming from out of town, to ensure this was a meaningful learning experience for all students. This moment (captured by our world class content partner Nucleus Hub) where all 24 judges came together between rounds was very special and got us all excited at where we go from here. Let's build this community -- TOGETHER -- as we explore, teach, learn and support the growing creator economy. Massive thanks to judges Jonathan Seiden Michael Calvin Jones Danielle Garno Kayla Morán Michael Isselin Demeka Fields Michael Raymond Selina Correa Brianna Schwartz Sophia Sofferman Brian Oliver Michael Gaid Mark Middlebrook Shermin Lakha, Esq. Frank Poe Sydney Landers Abraham Lichy Brenda Schamy Bob Philp Veda Cruz, Esq., MBA Tyler Chou Toam Rubinstein Sam Kilb and of course our constant collaborator and Arts Track Co-Director Vivek Jayaram! Your sacrifice to be with us in Miami and take the leap with us meant the world!Same place, same time next year?#counselingcreators #creatoreconomy #entertainmentlaw #sportslaw #artlaw

This party is not over yet! As we near the end of 2023, we proudly shine the spotlight on another outstanding alumnus, Gil Dagan, from the class of 2021/22, in our 20th Anniversary online celebration. Gil is currently immersed in research on copyright collecting societies in the music sector as a Doctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition. Learn more about Gil below. We asked him three questions, and here are his responses:What are you doing now? After graduating from the MIPLC LL.M. Program, followed by an internship at the legal department of GEMA, I continued as a Ph.D. student at the Max Planck Institute as part of the MIPLC-funded Ph.D. Program. I am currently working on my Ph.D. Thesis under the supervision of Professor Dr. Josef Drexl and Professor Dr. Silke von Lewinski. My research focuses on copyright collecting societies in the music sector and the challenges and opportunities they face in light of modern technology. How did the MIPLC program prepare you for today?First and foremost, the program gave me the confidence to pursue an academic career. When I started the program, I was still hesitant about whether I wanted to continue working as a practitioner or as an academic. Even before the program, I knew some of the professors through their books and articles. Meeting them in person and having in-depth discussions with them was a huge honor for me. On top of that, the program expanded my knowledge of intellectual property and competition law. Both of these legal fields are endless, and there is always more to learn. I strongly feel that the program equipped me with a solid theoretical foundation, which I currently use on a daily basis when I work on my research. What did you like best about being a student at MIPLC?I must say that the diversity of the students and alumni is one of the things that made my experience at MIPLC truly one of a kind. Being surrounded by bright, like-minded, and friendly people from many different backgrounds, in terms of both professional experience and countries of origin, was very inspiring. It was also a lot of fun because we got together often after classes and during the weekends. It helped deal with the intensity of the program quite a bit. The program provides excellent academic and practical skills, and it is no wonder that it attracts outstanding practitioners and academically oriented people from all over the world. I am forever grateful for being a part of such an amazing network. #MIPLC20 #miplc #LLM #miplcalumni
